Peloponnesian Explorer - 10 days tour


Day 1. Arrival, Corinth canal, ancient Corinth / Tolo
Arrival at the Athens airport. Welcome assistance by your expert guide and board the coach for a drive towards the Peloponnese. Our first stop will be at the impressive Corinth canal. Should time allows, we will be visiting the site of ancient Corinth. Further drive to arrive in Tolo, a seaside resort village close to Nafplion, which will be our base for the next two nights.EpidaurusTheater

Day 2. Epidaurus, Mycenae / Tolo.
The day is dedicated to exploring the Argolic plain. We begin our drive to arrive at Epidaurus for a guided visit to the site and the theater famous for its acoustics. Epidaurus is listed in UNESCO's world heritage monuments, and its theater is one of the best preserved classical theaters in Greece, still used in summer evenings for classical performances. It is the birthplace of Asklepios the healer, (Apollo's son), and was the most celebrated healing center of the classical world. Our day continues as we drive to Mycenae for your guided visit. Mycenae was the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon. Today, we can visit the ruins of the ancient Palace and Agamemnon's tomb with its famous Lion's gate. Argolis is famous for its grapes and wine products. Before we return to Tolo, we will visit a local winery to learn about the procedures of wine-making and to taste some of the local wines.

MystrasDay 3. Nafplion, Mystras / Gythion.
Our first visit today will be to Nafplion. This picturesque little town, is dominated by the impressive Venetian Palamidi castle, and was the first capital of modern Greece. We will take a short stop to admire the narrow little streets with the picturesque and well preserved classical buildings, and we will also admire the famous Bourtzi island. We continue our drive through the Peloponnesian mountains to arrive to the most important Byzantine site in Greece; the fortified city of Mystras. We will explore the fascinating monasteries and churches with exquisite frescoes and icons set amidst striking scenery. After our visit, we will continue to Gythion area for overnight.

Day 4. Monemvasia / Gythion.
After our breakfast, we will depart for our full day excursion to Monemvasia. Monemvasia is a small fortified island, connected with the Peloponnese with a small narrow strip of land and it is considered one of the most beautiful and well preserved fortified castle town in Greece, with great views to the Aegean. Return to our hotel in Gythio.

Day 5. Mani / Messini.
We leave Gythion behind as we will head towards Mani, one of the nicest areas of South Peloponnese. We will explore the picturesque villages with the stone built houses and their unique architecture. After a while we will arrive close to Areopolis and to the famous Diros Caves. This is a place where nature has really created extraordinary scenery. The Caves are formed at sea level and we will be exploring them using small boats. A visit that leaves the visitor speechless! Later, we will continue our drive towards Kalamata area. On the way we will be passing by numerous villages and we will stop for a while in Stoupa for a short break, to explore the famous little resort village. Late in the afternoon we will arrive in Messini for overnight in our hotel.Messini

Day 6. Messini / Olympia.
We have now reached the southwestern part of the Peloponnese, and during the day we shall explore the ancient Messinian castle and archeological site. After our visit a the Messinian plain we continue heading north. Our day will end as we arrive in the little town of Ancient Olympia overnight in our hotel.

Day 7. Olympia / Olympia.
This morning is dedicated to the birth place of the Olympic Games. During our guided visit, we will explore the site of Olympia with the temple of Zeus, the temple of Hera, the Stadium and the altar of the Olympic flame. We continue with a visit to the museum of Olympia. Overnight in Olympia.

OdontotosDay 8. Diakofto, Vouraikos gorge, Kalavrita / Athens.
This morning we will check out from our hotel and start heading towards Athens. However, during the day we will have one of the most beautiful experiences of this tour. On the way to Athens, we will be stopping at the little village of Diakofto, located between Patras and Corinth. From here, we will board a unique train for an unforgettable ride! The little "odontotos" is a rack and pinion train (the only one in Greece) which will travel us through extraordinary scenery inside the Vouraikos gorge to the mountain village of Kalavrita. Next to the river, through cliffs, over old bridges, among rich vegetation, this train ride is really a life experience! Upon arrival, we will have some free time to explore the picturesque mountain village of Kalavrita, possibly have some lunch on your own and then we will continue our drive to arrive in Athens for overnight.

Day 9. Athens / Athens.
The day is dedicated to exploring the city of Athens. We will begin with a panoramic tour passing by the most TempleOfZeusimportant monuments and landmarks of the city. We will marvel the Panathinaikon stadium (the marble stadium where the first modern Olympics – 1896 – took place), pass by the ex Royal Palace and today the Prime Minister's residence, the Zappion (ex Royal gardens and today conference and exhibition hall), the temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian's Arch, the Parliament and the tomb of the unknown soldier guarded by the colorful Evzones, Schliemann's' house, the Academy, the University, the National Library, the old Parliament, and Constitution (Syntagma) square to arrive at the Acropolis. Our guided visit to the Acropolis will include the Propylae, the temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion. Later, we will walk through Herodion and Dionysos theater to the nearby (new) museum of Acropolis for a guided visit.

Day 10. Departure.
Take advantage of your morning for your shopping at famous Ermou street or for a nice stroll in Plaka area until your private transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
